Pins and needles in the hands and feet

Brief tingling after sitting, sleeping on a limb, or holding a position often improves when pressure is removed. Tingling in hands and feet at the same time can suggest a more widespread nerve process, especially when it is gradual, recurring, or paired with burning, reduced balance, or altered temperature sensation. Peripheral Neuropathy is one possible explanation. Other conditions associated with nerve symptoms include Type 2 Diabetes, Vitamin B12 Deficiency, and Hypothyroidism. Anxiety or Panic Disorder may cause tingling during rapid breathing, but the distribution and accompanying symptoms still deserve a proper history.

Change position, walk gently if safe, and check whether sensation returns. Protect numb areas from hot surfaces, footwear that rubs, and unnoticed cuts. Keep a brief symptom diary covering onset, duration, body areas, triggers, balance, strength, and medicines. Arrange a routine appointment when symptoms recur, spread, last after movement, disturb sleep, or affect walking or hand use. A clinician may check strength, reflexes, sensation, circulation, and possible metabolic causes.

Get emergency help for sudden numbness or tingling with weakness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, confusion, severe headache, or new difficulty walking. These may occur with Stroke or Transient Ischaemic Attack. Seek urgent review for rapidly spreading symptoms, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe back pain with leg weakness, or a foot or hand that becomes cold or discoloured.

Ask whether the distribution suggests a single nerve or several nerves, which examination findings matter, and whether glucose, thyroid, or Vitamin B12 tests are relevant. Ask how to protect numb skin and which changes should prompt faster review.
