Pins and needles in a hand that will not go away

Temporary tingling can follow pressure on the wrist, elbow, or arm. When it continues after you change position, a nerve may remain compressed or inflamed. Tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers can fit a wrist-nerve pattern, while the ring and little fingers can fit an elbow-nerve pattern. A broader nerve problem may be associated with Type 2 Diabetes, Vitamin B12 Deficiency, Hypothyroidism, or Peripheral Neuropathy. The symptom does not identify one cause by itself, so an examination helps distinguish reduced sensation from weakness and locate the affected nerve.

Protect the hand from burns and cuts because reduced sensation can make injuries harder to notice. Keep the wrist in a neutral position, avoid leaning on the elbow, and take breaks from repetitive gripping or keyboard work. Do not use a tight support unless a clinician advises it. Record when the symptoms began, their exact distribution, triggers, and any loss of grip. Arrange a clinical review soon, particularly if symptoms interfere with sleep, work, buttons, writing, or walking with objects.

Call emergency services for sudden hand numbness or tingling with weakness of the arm or face, facial asymmetry, speech difficulty, confusion, severe headache, or new balance problems. These features can occur with Stroke or Transient Ischaemic Attack. Get urgent help if the hand is badly injured, markedly swollen, cold, discoloured, or intensely painful, or if weakness is rapidly worsening.

Ask which nerve distribution your symptoms follow, whether your grip and reflexes are affected, and whether your neck should be examined. Ask whether glucose, thyroid, or Vitamin B12 checks are suitable and what treatment or follow-up would be needed if symptoms persist.
