Pins and needles in both hands

Short answer
Pins and needles in both hands can reflect pressure at both wrists, neck or nerve irritation, or a wider health condition.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Observe
- Which fingers are affected and whether wrists are bent
- Reduce pressure
- Use neutral wrists and take activity breaks
- Act urgently
- Sudden weakness, facial change, or speech difficulty
Understanding the pattern
Both-hand tingling is common when wrists stay bent during sleep, keyboard work, cycling, or gripping. It may affect the thumb, index, and middle fingers, or the little-finger side, depending on the nerve involved. Persistent symptoms in both hands can also occur with Peripheral Neuropathy, Type 2 Diabetes, Vitamin B12 Deficiency, or Hypothyroidism. Anxiety and over-breathing during Panic Disorder may cause temporary tingling, often with other physical anxiety symptoms.
Helpful next steps
Notice which fingers tingle and whether shaking or changing wrist position helps. Keep wrists straight during sleep and tasks, loosen a tight grip, and take movement breaks. Avoid leaning on elbows or using heat on areas that feel numb. Arrange a clinical review when symptoms persist, recur, affect fine hand movements, or come with neck pain, dropping objects, or reduced grip.
When it is urgent
Get emergency help for sudden numbness or weakness on one side, facial drooping, speech problems, confusion, new vision changes, or severe loss of balance. Stroke and Transient Ischaemic Attack can present this way. Seek urgent assessment for rapidly increasing weakness, severe neck pain after trauma, or a hand that becomes cold, pale, or blue.
Questions for your doctor
Which fingers and activities suggest a particular nerve? Could my medicines or a health condition contribute? Would tests for blood sugar, thyroid function, or Vitamin B12 be useful?

Questions people ask
Can sleeping position cause tingling in both hands?
Yes. Bent wrists or pressure on the arms during sleep can irritate nerves and cause symptoms on waking.
What if I am dropping objects?
Reduced grip or clumsiness with persistent tingling should be assessed, particularly if it is worsening or accompanied by weakness.
