Pins and needles in the hands during pregnancy

Pregnancy-related fluid retention can narrow the space around a wrist nerve, causing tingling, numbness, burning, or aching in the hand and fingers. Symptoms may be worse at night, after repetitive hand use, or when the wrist is bent. Tingling can also have other causes, including pressure higher in the neck or arm, Peripheral Neuropathy, Type 2 Diabetes, Hypothyroidism, or Vitamin B12 Deficiency. Pregnancy does not make every new symptom harmless, so mention persistent or worsening changes to your maternity or primary-care team.

Keep the wrist in a neutral, straight position when resting and avoid prolonged bending or leaning on it. Gentle finger movement, raising the hands when comfortable, and taking breaks from repeated gripping may help. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether a night wrist support is suitable. Do not start supplements or medicines for tingling without checking that they are appropriate in pregnancy.

Contact your maternity team promptly if swelling appears suddenly or is marked, especially with headache, visual changes, pain under the ribs, or feeling unwell. Seek emergency help for sudden facial or arm weakness, speech difficulty, confusion, severe dizziness, or loss of balance, which may signal Stroke or a Transient Ischaemic Attack. Seek urgent review for severe hand pain, colour change, or rapidly progressing weakness.
