Pins and needles in the arms and hands: what to know

A change in position can briefly compress a nerve or reduce circulation, causing tingling that improves after movement. Ongoing symptoms may involve a nerve in the neck, wrist, elbow, or shoulder. Peripheral neuropathy, type 2 diabetes, vitamin B12 deficiency, and hypothyroidism are among the conditions a clinician may consider.

Anxiety or panic can cause tingling, particularly during rapid breathing, but the pattern and accompanying symptoms still matter. Symptoms affecting one side with weakness, facial drooping, speech trouble, severe dizziness, or sudden vision change can indicate stroke or a transient ischaemic attack.

Change position, gently move the affected hand and arm, and avoid leaning on an elbow or sleeping with a wrist sharply bent. Note whether symptoms follow a particular activity, affect one or both sides, wake you, or come with pain or weakness.

Book a clinical assessment if tingling keeps returning, lasts beyond a brief positional episode, or interferes with grip, walking, sleep, or work. Do not stop prescribed medicines or start supplements without advice.

Call emergency services immediately for sudden one-sided numbness or weakness, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, severe imbalance, or a sudden severe headache. Seek urgent help for pins and needles with chest pain, fainting, or marked breathing difficulty.

Tell the clinician when the sensation began, where it travels, and what makes it better or worse. Ask whether you need checks for blood sugar, thyroid function, vitamin levels, or nerve and neck problems.
