Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the thin surface covering the eye and inner eyelid. A viral infection, bacterial infection, allergy, or irritation can produce redness and watering, so the same appearance does not always call for the same treatment. Wash your hands before and after touching the eye. Gently clean crusting with clean water and a fresh pad for each eye, then discard the pad.
