Pink eye recovery: what to expect

Viral, bacterial, allergic, and irritant conjunctivitis do not follow identical courses. Redness or watering may linger after the worst discomfort has eased. Sticky discharge, increasing swelling, or symptoms that are not moving in the right direction suggest that the diagnosis or treatment may need review.

Feeling better does not make infection-control habits irrelevant. Wash hands after touching the eyes, use separate towels, and replace or clean eye cosmetics as advised. Avoid contact lenses until the eye is comfortable and a clinician has confirmed that restarting is appropriate.

Use a cool compress for irritation, clean discharge gently with a fresh clean cloth, and avoid rubbing. Keep smoke and dust away from the eyes. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed, but do not start leftover antibiotics because they may not match the cause.

A GP consultation can help if symptoms persist, recur, affect both eyes differently, or make work, school, or daily tasks difficult. Bring details of contact-lens use and any recent exposure to an affected person.

Seek prompt care for worsening pain, reduced or blurred vision, strong light sensitivity, a cloudy cornea, marked swelling, or a painful red eye in a contact-lens wearer. Get urgent help after an injury or chemical splash, or if fever and feeling very unwell accompany the eye symptoms.

Ask which cause is most consistent with your symptoms, how long to continue prescribed drops, when you can return to lenses or eye makeup, and which changes mean recovery is off course.
