Pink breast milk and mastitis: what to know

Mastitis is inflammation in the breast that can cause a tender, swollen, warm or reddened area. Nipple cracks, forceful milk removal, or tissue irritation can add a pink or rusty tint to milk. A breast lump or breast pain can accompany the inflammation; breast pain is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Pink milk does not automatically mean the milk is unsafe, but a clinician can help distinguish mastitis from another breast problem.

Continue feeding or expressing in a comfortable way if you can, and avoid vigorous massage or repeated pumping to empty the breast. Rest, drink to thirst, and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for swelling. Check for a cracked nipple and improve the baby's latch or positioning. A lactation consultation can assess attachment and milk removal. If symptoms are not settling, contact a healthcare professional because treatment may be needed.

Seek prompt medical advice for fever, chills, marked weakness, rapidly spreading redness, worsening pain, pus, or a firm area that does not improve. Urgent care is appropriate if you feel faint, confused, or severely ill. Arrange an assessment for repeated blood-stained milk, bleeding without visible nipple irritation, or a lump that remains after inflammation settles.

Ask what is causing the colour change, whether the breast needs examination, how to protect a cracked nipple, and which feeding or pain-relief options fit your situation. Mention fever, medicines, recent changes in pumping, and whether the colour comes from one breast or both.
