Pimples that won’t go away: what to know

A spot can linger when a pore remains blocked, inflammation continues, or a hair follicle is irritated. Acne commonly presents with recurring pimples, while folliculitis can cause similar bumps around hairs. Shaving, friction, heavy products, sweating, and picking may keep skin inflamed. Itchy bumps, facial flushing, crusting, or a cluster around the mouth can point toward another diagnosis. The pattern matters more than the word pimple alone. Notice where bumps occur, whether they itch or hurt, and whether they leave marks or scars. A clinician can distinguish acne from conditions requiring a different approach.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free cleanser. Avoid squeezing, scrubbing, or starting several new treatments together. Keep pillowcases, phones, helmets, and makeup tools clean, and choose non-comedogenic products when possible. If shaving seems linked, pause close shaving and avoid dragging a razor over active bumps. Track triggers and changes so an appointment is more useful. LED Light Therapy may be discussed for some acne concerns, but suitability depends on the diagnosis and skin sensitivity.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if bumps keep returning, become deep or painful, drain, scar, or fail to improve with gentle care. Seek prompt attention if redness spreads quickly, the area becomes hot and markedly swollen, or you develop fever or feel unwell. Swelling near the eyes, severe tenderness, or a rapidly enlarging lump also warrants urgent advice.
