Pimples on the head after shaving

Tiny red bumps around hairs, itching, burning, or pus after shaving can fit follicle inflammation. A hair cut very close to the skin may curve back into it, producing a tender ingrown-hair bump. Shaving can also aggravate existing acne or spread bacteria when the blade, hands, or tools are not clean. This pattern is often called [Razor Bumps](/conditions/pseudofolliculitis-barbae/), while [Folliculitis](/conditions/folliculitis/) is another possibility. Appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Pause close shaving until the skin settles. When shaving again, use a clean sharp blade, soften the hair first, shave in the direction of growth with light pressure, and avoid repeated passes. Do not share razors or pick at bumps. Rinse away hair products and choose non-irritating scalp care. If the spots are deep, widespread, or recurrent, a dermatologist can select treatment based on whether the problem is acne, ingrown hairs, or follicle inflammation. Arrange an assessment for recurring scalp bumps, hair loss over the affected area, scarring, or lesions that do not settle after stopping shaving. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, increasing warmth or swelling, severe pain, fever, or feeling unwell. Swelling near the eyes or a large tender lump also warrants timely review.
