Pimples on private parts in males: what to know

A bump around a hair may be folliculitis, especially after sweating, friction, or shaving. Acne can also affect skin that has oil glands, while a small smooth spot may be a normal skin feature rather than acne. Location matters: bumps on hair-bearing skin differ from sores on the penis or scrotal skin. Do not squeeze, lance, or scrape them, because broken skin can become more inflamed.

Notice whether the area itches, hurts, drains, crusts, or changes after sexual contact. Those details help a clinician distinguish irritation from an infection or another skin condition; a photo and symptom timeline can be useful.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Wear loose, breathable underwear and change after exercise. Pause shaving and avoid fragranced sprays, harsh scrubs, and products intended for facial acne unless a clinician says they are suitable for that sensitive skin. A warm, clean compress may soothe a tender follicle. Keep towels and razors personal, and avoid picking.

Arrange medical care if bumps are rapidly spreading, very painful, repeatedly returning, filled with pus, or accompanied by fever, marked swelling, or difficulty passing urine. Seek prompt assessment for blisters, open sores, ulcers, or a new genital lesion after sexual contact. A clinician can examine the skin and choose treatment based on the appearance rather than guessing from the word “pimple.”

Ask: Could this be folliculitis or acne? Should I stop shaving or change products? Do I need testing for an infection? What symptoms would mean I should return quickly?
