The vagina and inner vulval tissue are not appropriate places for over-the-counter acne products unless a clinician has advised them.

Depending on the findings, treatment could involve a prescribed topical medicine for acne or follicle inflammation, advice about shaving technique, drainage of a collection, or testing and targeted medicine for an infection. Do not share prescription creams or use steroid, antibiotic, or antifungal products without guidance. Tell the clinician if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, breastfeeding, or taking regular medicines because that can affect the choice.

Make an appointment for recurring, scarring, draining, or persistent bumps, or whenever the diagnosis is uncertain. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe or escalating pain, major swelling, difficulty urinating, or feeling unwell. New sores or blisters after sexual contact should be assessed rather than treated as pimples.

Ask what the bump is, which area the treatment may touch, how long to use it, and what irritation should prompt stopping. Ask whether testing is needed, how to prevent recurrence, and whether shaving, friction, or cycle-related changes are contributing.
