Pimples on female private parts: what to know

On hair-bearing outer skin, small bumps may follow shaving, waxing, sweat, tight clothing, or friction and can represent folliculitis or ingrown hairs. Acne can also affect the groin area. A bump on the inner vulval surface may instead be an irritated gland or another condition, so do not assume every spot is acne. Sores, blisters, warts, unusual discharge, or burning with urination need a different assessment. This symptom alone does not identify a sexually transmitted infection or any single diagnosis.

Rinse the external skin with lukewarm water, dry by patting, and wear loose breathable underwear. Pause shaving, waxing, fragranced washes, deodorants, and scrubbing until the skin is calm. Do not squeeze, lance, or apply household antiseptics, toothpaste, or essential oils. Keep any acne or follicle product away from mucosal surfaces unless a clinician specifically directs its use. If a new sexual exposure, pregnancy, or recurrent painful lump is relevant, tell the clinician privately and directly.

Arrange an examination for a painful lump, repeated boils, pus, an open sore, blisters, spreading redness, or a bump that does not improve. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, difficulty passing urine, or feeling unwell. A clinician can inspect the external skin and decide whether testing or treatment is appropriate.

Ask whether the bumps are most consistent with Acne, Folliculitis, ingrown hairs, or another issue; whether testing is needed; and which products are safe for external vulval skin. Mention hair removal, cycle timing, discharge, sores, and recurrence.
