Pimples in the male groin area: what to know

A bump around a hair may be folliculitis or an ingrown hair; folliculitis commonly presents with inflamed follicle-centred bumps. Acne can also affect hair-bearing skin, but sores, blisters, ulcers, warts, or a discharge from the penis need a different assessment. A groin pimple is not enough to identify a sexually transmitted infection, and a sexually transmitted infection can sometimes have few visible skin changes.

Pause shaving and waxing until the skin settles, wash gently, pat dry, and wear loose breathable underwear. Avoid squeezing, fragranced products, and sharing towels or razors. Do not apply acne medicines, steroid creams, or antiseptics to the penis or scrotum unless a clinician advises it. If there has been sexual contact and the bumps are new, avoid sexual contact until assessed and consider sexual-health testing.

Arrange prompt review for genital sores, blisters, ulcers, spreading redness, increasing warmth, severe pain, pus, fever, swollen groin glands, or a lump that persists. Urgent care is appropriate for severe scrotal pain or swelling, difficulty passing urine, or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Ask whether the bumps are folliculitis, ingrown hairs, acne, or an infection; whether testing is needed; and which products are safe for the exact groin and genital skin involved.
