Pimples around the eyes when they are not milia

The thin skin around the eyes can react to makeup, sunscreen, moisturiser, lash products, hair products or rubbing. Acne may cause individual inflamed spots, while folliculitis may produce small bumps close to lashes or brows. Perioral dermatitis can affect nearby facial skin and may sting or feel dry. A bump on the eyelid margin may instead involve an eyelid gland and should not be treated like ordinary facial acne. Do not assume a bump is milia simply because it is small and pale.

Pause newly introduced eye and lash products, wash gently with lukewarm water, and keep hands and pillowcases clean. Do not use acne acids, retinoids, steroid creams or essential oils close to the eye unless a clinician specifically directs you. Avoid squeezing or scraping the bump. Seek urgent medical care for eye pain, vision changes, marked eyelid swelling, pain with eye movement, light sensitivity, fever, or redness spreading around the eye. Arrange a routine assessment for a persistent, recurrent, bleeding or changing bump, or one that affects the lash line. Remove contact lenses if the eye itself is irritated and seek advice.
