Pimples after shaving pubic hair

Shaving cuts hair at an angle and can leave a sharp tip that curls into nearby skin. Tight clothing, sweat and repeated rubbing can then inflame the follicle. Folliculitis may produce tender red bumps or pustules around hairs. Acne can occur in the groin but is not established simply because a bump appears after shaving. Hormonal acne tends to recur in a wider pattern. Blisters, ulcers, warts or lesions unrelated to hair follicles should be assessed rather than treated as shaving pimples.

Leave the area unshaved while bumps are active. Clean gently, dry by patting and choose loose clothing that reduces rubbing. Avoid picking, popping, scrubbing and fragranced intimate products. Do not put strong acne treatments or leftover prescription creams on pubic or genital skin without medical advice. For future shaving, use warm water and shaving gel, a clean razor, light strokes in the direction of growth and as few passes as possible. If the problem keeps returning, discuss a different hair-removal approach and whether a dermatologist should check for folliculitis or razor bumps.

Get medical advice for recurrent, spreading or worsening bumps, significant tenderness, pus, scarring, fever, swollen groin glands, blisters, ulcers or symptoms after sexual contact. Seek prompt help if swelling is rapidly increasing, urination becomes difficult, or you feel substantially unwell. A clinician can examine the lesions and choose treatment based on their appearance and location.
