Pimples after shaving the genital area

Bumps around shaved hair can occur when cut hairs curve back into the skin, or when friction and bacteria inflame a follicle. Acne is less commonly limited to the shaved area, while hormonal acne usually follows a broader recurring pattern. Lesions on genital skin are not always pimples: blisters, ulcers, warts or a painful cluster may need a sexual-health assessment. The timing after shaving is useful, but it cannot establish the cause by itself.

Stop shaving until the skin has recovered. Rinse gently with lukewarm water, pat dry and wear loose breathable underwear. Avoid fragranced washes, deodorising products, scrubs and squeezing. Do not apply acne acids, steroid creams or antibiotic ointments to genital skin unless a clinician recommends them. If you shave again, soften the hair, use clean equipment and gel, make few light strokes in the direction of growth, and avoid shaving very close. Recurrent bumps can be assessed for razor bumps or folliculitis and discussed alongside other hair-removal options.

Seek prompt care for severe or increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, red streaks, difficulty passing urine, or redness spreading beyond the shaved area. Arrange an examination for recurrent lesions, scarring, ulcers, blisters, warts or symptoms after sexual contact. Urgent assessment is appropriate for rapidly worsening swelling or feeling faint or very unwell.
