Pilar Cyst Pop: What to Do

A pilar cyst is enclosed beneath the scalp. Pressure may release thick material, but an opening does not necessarily remove the enclosing sac. The scalp can then become raw, swollen, or contaminated, especially when hair, fingers, or a comb touch the site. A lump that leaks is not automatically healed.

A changing scalp bump also needs a proper examination rather than repeated drainage attempts. The appearance after popping may hide the original features that help a clinician identify it.

Stop squeezing and wash your hands. Gently rinse the area with clean water, pat it dry, and cover an open spot with a clean dressing. Keep hair products and comb teeth away from the wound, and do not insert anything into the opening. Arrange medical advice if the cyst is painful, recurrent, or difficult to keep clean.

Seek prompt care for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pain, or pus-like drainage. Urgent assessment is needed for bleeding that does not settle with gentle pressure, spreading redness, fever, or feeling faint or unwell. Do not wait for a home remedy to improve a worsening wound.

Tell your doctor when it opened, whether material came out, and what symptoms followed. Ask whether the wound needs treatment, how to wash it, and whether removing the cyst sac would reduce repeat flare-ups.
