Pilar Cyst on the Scalp: Symptoms

A pilar cyst usually presents as a rounded bump beneath the scalp skin. It may feel firm or smooth and can move slightly under gentle pressure. Many are not painful. The overlying skin may look normal, and hair may grow over or around the area.

Friction from brushing, pressure while sleeping, or an accidental knock can make the lump sore. Redness, heat, swelling, or fluid suggests that the area is irritated or inflamed. These findings do not establish the cause by themselves, because other skin lumps can resemble a pilar cyst.

Do not pop, pierce, or pick at the bump. Use gentle shampoo, avoid scraping it with a comb, and arrange a clinical assessment if it remains, grows, catches during grooming, or becomes uncomfortable. Photographing the area and noting changes can help you describe its course.
