Pilar Cyst on the Head: Removal at Home

A pilar cyst is a sac under the scalp that is linked to a hair follicle. It may feel like a smooth, movable bump, but a person cannot reliably diagnose it by touch alone. A needle, blade, or squeezing can open the skin without removing the sac. Contents may leak, the wound may become inflamed, and the lump may return.

The scalp can bleed easily, and hair makes cleaning and dressing a wound more difficult. A painful or changing lump may also need a different diagnosis, so treatment should follow an examination.

Leave the skin intact and avoid picking at a scab or trying to drain the bump. Wash normally with mild shampoo, keep combs away from the tender spot, and arrange a dermatology visit if the lump is persistent, catches during grooming, or is uncomfortable.
