Picosecond laser for pigmentation: what to know

Short answer
Picosecond laser can target selected pigment in the skin, but the correct approach depends on what caused the pigmentation, its depth and your risk of post-treatment colour change.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First step
- Identify the cause and type of pigmentation.
- Recovery focus
- Gentle care, less friction and reliable light protection.
What the treatment is targeting
Pigmentation may follow acne, injury, inflammation or sun exposure, or may be part of melasma or another condition. Picosecond pulses can disrupt pigment particles in a selected area, while the surrounding skin is treated as carefully as possible. A dark mark that changes, bleeds, crusts without healing or has an irregular appearance should be assessed before cosmetic treatment. The colour may fade gradually, and temporary darkening or lightening can occur.
Steps before and after treatment
Bring a list of medicines and skincare products, and disclose tanning, active eczema, cold sores and any history of dark marks after procedures. Follow instructions to avoid irritating products before the session. Afterwards, keep the area clean, avoid picking, reduce heat and friction, and use the recommended sun protection. Attend review if advised so the clinician can decide whether the response is healing as expected before another session.
When to seek care
Report increasing tenderness, spreading warmth, pus, extensive blistering or a wound that is not closing. Seek urgent care if swelling affects breathing or vision, or if severe pain develops with rapidly worsening skin changes.
Questions for your doctor
What type of pigmentation do I have, how deep is it, and why is this laser appropriate? What colour change is possible for my skin, and what aftercare will lower irritation?

Questions people ask
Can every pigmentation mark be lasered?
No. The diagnosis, depth, location and behaviour of a mark determine whether laser is appropriate.
Can skin become lighter after treatment?
A temporary lighter or darker patch is possible, particularly when pigment-producing skin is irritated.
