What should you know about picosecond diode laser?

Picosecond refers to an extremely short pulse duration. Diode refers to the laser source and its typical wavelength range. They are not interchangeable labels: a clinic should be able to name the device, wavelength and intended target, such as hair follicles or pigment.

Diode laser systems are commonly discussed for hair reduction because their light is absorbed by pigment in the follicle and converted to heat. A picosecond system is generally selected for very brief pulses and may be used for pigment or tattoo work, depending on its design. The treatment name alone does not establish which result is expected.

Ask the provider to explain the machine and target in plain language. Mention tanning, naturally dark or recently lightened hair, pigment changes, medicines that increase light sensitivity, cold sores, scarring history and active irritation. For hair treatment, follow instructions about shaving and avoid waxing or plucking if advised.

After laser treatment, mild redness, warmth, swelling or temporary sensitivity can occur. Use gentle skincare and sun protection, avoid picking or rubbing treated skin, and follow the specific instructions for the area. Hair reduction usually needs repeated appointments because follicles cycle through growth phases.

Contact the clinic if pain is severe or worsening, blisters form, skin becomes increasingly swollen, or colour change persists or spreads. Seek medical assessment for pus, fever or spreading warmth, and stop further sessions until the reaction has been reviewed.

Ask whether the proposed treatment uses a picosecond laser, a diode laser, or a device combining different modes. Confirm the target, wavelength, expected sensations, skin-tone precautions, preparation and aftercare. If the goal is hair reduction, ask how the plan differs from standard laser hair removal.
