What should you know about pico laser for surgical scars?

A surgical scar may be raised, indented, wide, tight, red, brown, or lighter than nearby skin. Pico laser is a light-based treatment that can target selected pigment and deliver a controlled stimulus to the skin. It may help some colour differences and surface texture, but it cannot recreate normal tissue or remove a scar completely. A newly closed incision, an actively inflamed scar, or a scar that is growing and itchy needs medical review before cosmetic treatment. The original operation, wound healing, and any history of abnormal scarring affect the plan.

Bring the operation date and details of wound healing, and tell the clinician about infection, wound separation, steroid injections, silicone use, allergies, medicines, and any tendency to develop thick scars. The clinician may recommend waiting until the incision is fully healed, photographing the scar, or combining approaches suited to its colour and contour. During treatment, brief heat, redness, swelling, dryness, or temporary darkening can occur. Keep the area clean, avoid friction and picking, and shield it from sunlight. Do not apply a laser over an open or draining wound.

Contact the surgeon or treating clinic for increasing scar pain, warmth, drainage, spreading redness, wound opening, or sudden swelling. A scar that becomes rapidly thicker, very itchy, or extends beyond the original incision deserves assessment. Blisters, severe tenderness, or marked colour change after laser may indicate injury. Fever or feeling unwell warrants prompt medical care.
