What should you know about picking cradle cap off?

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, commonly appears as greasy or dry yellowish scales on the scalp. It is usually not caused by poor hygiene. Scraping with fingernails can remove delicate surface skin, create tiny breaks, and make irritation more noticeable. A rash that spreads beyond the scalp, looks very inflamed, or does not fit this pattern may need a different diagnosis.

Use a small amount of an age-appropriate emollient to soften the scale, then wash with a mild baby shampoo. When the scale has loosened, use a soft brush or cloth with light pressure; leave firmly attached areas alone and repeat the routine later. Do not use essential oils, adult medicated products, or a medicated cream unless a clinician recommends it. Persistent or extensive cases may need Emollient Therapy or Topical Antifungal Treatment.

Contact a clinician if the scalp bleeds, oozes, develops pus, becomes painful, or is increasingly red or swollen. Seek advice when the rash spreads, the baby seems unwell, or scales persist despite gentle care. Prompt review is appropriate if there is concern about infection or another skin condition.
