Physiotherapy tape

Short answer
Physiotherapy tape may offer temporary support, movement guidance or sensory feedback, but it should complement assessment and exercise rather than replace them.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What tape can and cannot do
A physiotherapist may apply elastic or firm tape to influence how you notice movement, support a vulnerable area during an activity, or reduce rubbing over a sensitive region. The purpose depends on the body part and the wider rehabilitation plan. Tape may be used alongside exercises for an ankle sprain or Achilles tendinitis, but it does not reconnect damaged tissue or correct every cause of pain.
The adhesive can irritate skin, and tape that is too tight can cause tingling, colour change or swelling below the application. Some people need a different material or should avoid adhesive altogether because of skin sensitivity.
Using tape carefully
Have the first application demonstrated by a qualified clinician, especially around a joint, the neck or an area with nerve symptoms. Apply it to clean, dry, intact skin without pulling it so tightly that circulation changes. Remove it slowly if itching, burning, rash, numbness or increasing pain develops, and check the skin after removal.
Do not use tape to keep exercising through sharp pain or to postpone assessment of a new injury. Keep following the strengthening, mobility and load-management advice that gives the tape its context.
When to seek care
Seek advice if taped symptoms include new weakness, persistent pins and needles, loss of grip, unusual coldness or colour change. Arrange assessment for pain after a significant injury, a worsening lump or swelling, or difficulty using the limb. Remove tape promptly if the skin becomes blistered or intensely inflamed.
Questions to ask
What is this tape intended to change? How long should it stay on, and how should I remove it? Can I use it during sport, bathing or sleep? What skin or nerve symptoms mean I should stop?

Questions people ask
Can physiotherapy tape replace exercises?
No. Tape is generally an adjunct; the rehabilitation plan may still need movement practice, strengthening and load changes.
Can tape be applied over irritated skin?
No. Adhesive should not cover broken or inflamed skin, and it should be removed if irritation develops.
