What should you know about photos of yeast infection on the face?

Yeast can live on skin without causing illness. When it overgrows, a rash may be red, itchy, scaly or moist, but those features are not unique to yeast. Irritant dermatitis, eczema, ringworm and bacterial infection can have overlapping appearances. Vaginal thrush is a different clinical problem from a rash on the face, so genital symptoms do not prove that a facial mark has the same cause.

A clinician may ask when the rash began, whether it is spreading, what products touch the skin, and whether you have used steroid creams or antibiotics. They may examine the area and take a skin sample if the diagnosis is uncertain.

Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry and pause new cosmetics, fragranced products and unprescribed steroid creams on the rash. Avoid sharing towels and avoid scratching. Do not apply vaginal antifungal products to the face unless a clinician specifically tells you to. Keep a note of triggers and changes, and arrange an assessment if the rash persists or returns.

Seek urgent care for swelling around the eyes or lips, trouble breathing, severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, pus or a high fever. Arrange prompt review for a rash near the eye, a rash in someone with a weakened immune system, or symptoms that worsen despite gentle skin care. Confirmed yeast may be treated with an appropriate antifungal medicine.
