Photon laser hair removal: what to know

Short answer

Photon laser hair removal uses concentrated light to heat hair follicles, and safe treatment depends on the laser type, skin assessment, and careful aftercare.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the treatment works

Laser energy is absorbed more strongly by pigment in the hair than by the surrounding skin. The heat can damage a follicle’s ability to produce hair, but hairs are not all in the same growth phase at one visit. This is why a treatment plan uses repeat sessions and why results vary between body areas, hair colours, skin tones, hormonal influences, and device settings.

A clinic may use an Alexandrite, diode, or Nd:YAG laser. These technologies differ in wavelength and how they interact with skin pigment. Laser hair removal is not the same as treating a rash, bumps, or a condition such as hirsutism; those concerns may need diagnosis alongside hair reduction.

Preparing for a session

Tell the provider about recent tanning, medicines, scars, active skin disease, cold sores, and a history of dark or light marks after irritation. Avoid plucking or waxing for the period advised by the clinic, because the follicle is the target. Follow instructions about shaving, sun protection, and products on the area. After treatment, mild warmth or temporary redness can occur; use the recommended soothing care and avoid friction, heat, and unapproved products until the skin settles.

When to seek medical advice

Contact the provider for increasing pain, blistering, marked swelling, pus, spreading redness, or a persistent change in skin colour. New painful lumps, draining areas, or recurrent inflammation may point to a separate problem rather than ordinary hair growth and deserve assessment. Do not continue sessions over irritated or infected skin without clinical advice.

Questions to ask

Which laser suits my skin tone and hair type? What should I do about tanning, shaving, or my current medicines? Could my unwanted hair be related to hirsutism? How will you protect darker or sensitive skin, and which reaction should prompt a review?

Questions people ask

Is photon laser hair removal the same as IPL?

Not necessarily. Laser devices deliver a specific wavelength, while IPL uses a broader range of light; the provider should identify the device being used.

Can laser hair removal help ingrown hairs?

Reducing hair growth may reduce repeated shaving-related ingrown hairs for some people, but existing inflamed or infected bumps need separate care.
