What should you know about phlegmonous laryngitis?

Unlike mild laryngitis after a cold, phlegmonous inflammation involves deeper tissues near the larynx. It may cause severe throat pain, a muffled or hoarse voice, painful swallowing, fever, and swelling in the neck. A sore throat or hoarse voice can occur with many less serious problems, so these symptoms do not identify this condition on their own. A clinician may examine the throat and voice, assess breathing, and arrange specialist evaluation or hospital care when the airway is threatened.

Acid reflux and a common cold can irritate the larynx, but they do not explain every severe or rapidly worsening throat symptom. Avoid trying to examine a swollen throat yourself.

Seek same-day medical assessment if this condition is suspected. Keep upright, take small sips only if swallowing is safe, and avoid smoking, alcohol, and strenuous voice use. Do not force food or tablets through a painful or obstructed throat. Treatment may involve prescription antimicrobial medicine, monitoring, fluids, and specialist airway support, depending on examination findings. A GP consultation can be a starting point when breathing and swallowing are stable.

Call emergency services immediately for noisy or difficult breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, rapidly increasing neck or throat swelling, blue lips, confusion, or a rapidly worsening voice. Sit upright while waiting and do not lie flat if breathing feels restricted. Airway symptoms require emergency care rather than home treatment.

Ask whether the swelling involves the larynx, whether an ear-nose-and-throat review is needed, which treatment is being considered, and which breathing or swallowing changes should trigger emergency help. Mention the onset and speed of worsening, fever, recent infection, reflux symptoms, and any difficulty taking fluids.
