What should you know about a Philips PET-CT scanner?

A PET-CT examination uses a small amount of a radioactive tracer followed by imaging. The tracer collects differently in tissues according to its biological activity, while the CT portion maps structures and their position. Combining the images can help clinicians compare an area of concern with surrounding tissue and assess findings in more than one body region.

The scan is an aid to diagnosis, staging or treatment assessment, not a stand-alone answer. Inflammation and some non-cancerous conditions can also alter tracer uptake. The report is interpreted with your symptoms, examination, previous images, biopsy findings and other tests. A scan may identify a useful target for further evaluation, but it does not replace tissue diagnosis when a biopsy is needed.

Follow the centre’s instructions about fasting, water, medicines and activity. Tell staff about diabetes, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, recent illness and difficulty lying still. Wear comfortable clothing and remove metal items if asked. After the tracer is given, you may rest quietly before imaging; the scan itself requires you to remain still while the table moves through the scanner.

Tell the imaging team immediately about trouble breathing, facial swelling, severe dizziness, chest discomfort or feeling faint during or after the appointment. After returning home, seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, collapse or rapidly worsening swelling. Contact your care team for persistent vomiting, inability to drink, or concerns about blood glucose if you have diabetes.
