IPL and laser both use light to heat pigment associated with a hair follicle. IPL releases a broad spectrum, while clinic systems use a selected wavelength and trained operator adjustments. Even when hair becomes finer or less visible, maintenance may be needed and hormonal hair growth can continue.

Read the instructions, check the permitted skin and hair combination, and use a patch test if advised. Prepare the hair as directed, keep the window flat against clean dry skin, and use only the recommended frequency. Skip areas with tattoos, dark marks, wounds, active dermatitis, or sunburn. Do not use the device to treat a lump, rash, or unexplained change in the skin.

Stop and obtain medical advice if flashes are followed by blisters, burns, severe pain, marked swelling, pus, or redness that continues to expand. Persistent pigment change should be examined. Painful recurring nodules, tunnels, or drainage are not ordinary hair-removal problems and may suggest hidradenitis suppurativa.
