Home IPL devices release broad-spectrum light rather than the single wavelength used by a clinic laser. Hair pigment absorbs the light, producing heat around the follicle. Because hairs cycle through growth phases, one session cannot affect every hair equally. Results vary with hair colour, skin tone, body area, hormonal influences, and device settings. IPL may also be used in professional settings for selected skin concerns, but hair-removal use and a photofacial are different goals.

Read the device instructions and use the recommended skin-tone sensor or safety check. Remove visible hair as directed, keep the skin clean and dry, and avoid applying perfume or irritating products immediately beforehand. Protect tattoos, dark marks, moles, and irritated or broken skin according to the instructions. Start with the lowest suitable setting and do not repeatedly flash the same spot. Avoid tanning around treatment and keep treated skin protected from strong sun.

Stop using the device and seek medical advice for blistering, severe pain, spreading redness, marked swelling, pus, or a changing dark spot. A clinician should assess unexplained hair growth, recurrent boils, or painful nodules rather than treating the surface alone. Do not use IPL over an active rash or infection, and ask a clinician about medicines that increase light sensitivity.
