Petroleum Jelly for Hand Eczema: What to Know

Hand eczema can weaken the skin barrier, allowing water to escape and irritants such as soap, detergent, and frequent wetting to sting more easily. Petroleum jelly forms an occlusive layer over the surface. This reduces moisture loss and cushions fissures while the barrier repairs. It may be especially useful after washing and before sleep. It will not remove a trigger, clear an infection, or replace anti-inflammatory treatment when redness, swelling, or itch remains active.

Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser, pat dry, then smooth a thin layer over the backs of the hands, palms, fingertips, and around visible cracks. Reapply whenever the skin feels tight, particularly after handwashing. At night, a generous layer under soft cotton gloves can reduce rubbing and help the product stay in place. Avoid trapping product over skin that is wet, oozing, or showing spreading crusts. Pairing this routine with an emollient plan may give more consistent barrier support.

Arrange an assessment if painful fissures keep reopening, work or sleep is being disrupted, or symptoms do not settle with gentle skin care. Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, pus, honey-coloured crusting, marked swelling, fever, or rapidly spreading redness, because these changes can signal infection. A clinician may consider a prescribed topical anti-inflammatory or another diagnosis when the pattern is persistent.
