What should you know about PET scans for lung cancer?

Short answer
A PET scan for lung cancer shows tracer activity in the lungs and elsewhere, helping the team assess spread and plan further testing or treatment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main role
- Assesses activity in the chest and other body regions
- Usually combined with
- CT, which supplies detailed anatomy
- Important limit
- Infection and inflammation can also cause tracer uptake
Why PET is used
PET is commonly combined with CT. CT shows the size and position of a lung nodule, lymph node, or other structure, while PET shows areas using more tracer. This can help clinicians assess lymph nodes and look for disease outside the chest. A scan may also provide a baseline for later comparison.
Tracer uptake is not specific to cancer. Infection and inflammation can also look active, and some tumours may show less uptake. A PET finding therefore guides decisions but does not replace a biopsy when tissue is needed. Brain assessment may require a different type of imaging because normal brain activity can limit PET interpretation there.
Preparing for the scan and next steps
Follow instructions about fasting, medicines, water, and diabetes. Tell the team about pregnancy, breastfeeding, recent infection, and any difficulty lying flat. After injection, rest quietly; then remain still during the scan. Results are considered with chest imaging, examination, pathology, and sometimes genomic tumour profiling.
Depending on the findings, the care plan might include surgery such as a lung lobectomy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or another systemic treatment. Supportive and palliative care can be added at any stage to help with symptoms and quality of life; it does not mean that cancer treatment must stop.
When to seek care
Tell imaging staff immediately about wheezing, swelling, rash, faintness, or breathing difficulty after the injection. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue lips, or collapse. Outside the scan appointment, seek prompt medical assessment for new or worsening breathlessness, coughing blood, chest pain, confusion, or weakness.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what the scan is checking, whether a suspicious area needs biopsy, and how the result changes staging. Ask whether the plan depends on tumour markers or genomic testing, and which symptoms should trigger a call while you wait.
Questions people ask
Does a PET scan prove that a lung nodule is cancer?
No. Uptake can have several causes, and tissue sampling may be needed to identify the diagnosis.
Can PET show whether lung cancer has spread?
It can identify areas that need assessment throughout the scanned body, but findings are interpreted with other tests and may need confirmation.
