What should you know about PET scan: what is it used for?

The FDG tracer highlights glucose use, and the CT component places that activity within the body's structures. Depending on the referral, a PET-CT may help investigate a suspicious finding, assess the distribution of known cancer, support treatment planning, select a biopsy target, or monitor change after treatment.

The test is one part of a diagnostic process. Active tissue can reflect infection, inflammation, healing, or normal body function as well as cancer. Some conditions are better assessed with another scan or a tissue sample. Your clinician uses the report alongside symptoms, examination, laboratory results, and previous images.

Before attending, follow instructions about fasting, water, exercise, and regular medicines. Tell the team about diabetes, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, recent illness, and previous reactions to scan medicines. After the tracer is injected, you will rest quietly before lying still for the scan. Ask when normal eating, activity, and contact with others can resume if you have concerns.

Alert staff immediately to wheezing, facial or throat swelling, severe dizziness, or intense injection-site pain. After the appointment, urgent medical care is appropriate for breathing difficulty, fainting, a widespread rash, or rapidly worsening swelling.
