Understanding PET scan information

Terms such as uptake, activity, focus, lesion, node, and avidity describe what appears on an image; they do not automatically name a disease. A focus means an area that stands out, while a lesion means an area that differs from surrounding tissue. The radiologist weighs its shape, position, distribution, and relationship to nearby structures.

A PET scan uses a tracer that follows a biological process, often energy use. Areas of infection or inflammation may also take up tracer, and some cancers may show little activity with a particular tracer. A combined PET-CT scan therefore offers useful context, but a report may still recommend tissue sampling, another scan, or interval review.

Read the impression section with the clinician who requested the scan, and bring questions about unfamiliar wording. Tell the team about recent surgery, radiation, infection, vaccination, medicines, and changes in symptoms because these details can affect interpretation. Follow the centre’s instructions on preparation, especially if diabetes or eating restrictions apply.

Ask for the next action in plain language: observation, another diagnostic test, biopsy, or treatment planning. Keep the report and images available if you see another specialist. A single phrase should not be used to make a treatment decision without the complete clinical picture.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, facial swelling, or a rapidly spreading rash during or after the appointment. Contact your care team promptly for new severe pain, confusion, weakness, or other sudden symptoms. These symptoms need assessment independently of the written scan result.

Ask what the main finding is, where it is located, and how confident the report is. Ask whether a recent infection or treatment could explain uptake, whether comparison images were reviewed, and what result would change the proposed next step.
