PET scan radiology

A PET study has two complementary parts. The PET images show where the tracer is collecting, while CT images show the shape and position of organs, lymph nodes, and other structures. The radiology team aligns these views and compares them with earlier examinations when available.

The report may describe location, size, pattern, and intensity of activity, then classify findings according to the clinical question. Activity can reflect normal physiology, infection, inflammation, or cancer, so the report is not a stand-alone diagnosis. The reason for referral, symptoms, blood tests, previous imaging, and treatment history all affect interpretation.

Bring or arrange access to previous scans and reports, and provide an accurate list of medicines and recent treatments. Follow preparation guidance about fasting, hydration, exercise, and diabetes management. During imaging, remain still and tell the technologist if pain makes that difficult; small movements can reduce image clarity.

When the report is ready, ask the clinician who ordered the test to translate technical terms into a plan. A radiologist may recommend comparison imaging or another test, while the treating team decides how the result fits with biopsy findings and symptoms. Keep a copy of the report for future consultations.

During or after the examination, report severe dizziness, breathing problems, facial swelling, or a rapidly spreading rash. Seek urgent care for collapse, severe weakness, or new neurological symptoms. These concerns require clinical assessment and should not wait for the imaging report.

Ask what the radiologist was specifically looking for, which findings are definite versus uncertain, and whether comparison with older images changes the interpretation. Ask whether inflammation or recent treatment could affect uptake, what test comes next, and who will coordinate follow-up.
