What Is a PET Scan Used to Detect?

A small amount of FDG Radiotracer is used because many active cells take up glucose. The resulting images can highlight activity in a body region, while the CT part shows its anatomy and location. A bright area is not a diagnosis by itself: infection, inflammation, healing tissue, and some normal organs can also be active.

Clinicians may use a PET-CT Scan to look for disease that has spread, investigate a finding whose origin is unclear, compare activity before and after treatment, or help plan a biopsy. In suspected Lymphoma, patterns of activity across lymph nodes and organs can support staging and follow-up.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about fasting, medicines, diabetes, and activity before the appointment. Tell the team about pregnancy, breastfeeding, recent illness, and any difficulty lying still. Wear comfortable clothing and allow time for the tracer to circulate and for imaging.

Afterward, ask when the report will be discussed and which finding needs correlation with examination, CT detail, MRI, or tissue sampling. If a scan raises concern for Cancer of Unknown Primary, further tests may be needed to locate the starting site.

A PET scan is usually arranged as part of planned assessment, so contact the ordering team if you cannot attend or if preparation instructions are unclear. Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pressure, fainting, new confusion, or a rapidly worsening condition; these symptoms need assessment regardless of scan timing.
