What should you know about a PET scan heart test?

PET imaging can provide functional information about the heart that complements anatomy from CT. The exact purpose depends on the tracer and may include assessing blood flow, how heart muscle is using energy, or whether tissue remains active after an injury. FDG Radiotracer is one tracer used for selected questions, but it is not suitable for every cardiac study. The report is considered with symptoms, an electrocardiogram, blood tests, echocardiography, and other imaging. A PET result does not replace an examination or automatically identify the cause of chest symptoms.

Preparation varies considerably by the cardiac protocol. Follow the centre’s instructions about fasting, meals, caffeine, exercise, medicines, and blood sugar; do not change prescribed medicines unless the team tells you to. Tell staff about diabetes, pregnancy or breastfeeding, allergies, and recent illness. The visit may include resting or stress imaging, a tracer injection, a quiet waiting period, and time lying still in the PET-CT Scanner. Ask when the result will be reviewed.

Call emergency services for severe or persistent chest pressure, severe breathlessness, collapse, fainting, new weakness, or a cold, pale, painful limb. Do not wait for a planned PET appointment when these symptoms occur. For less urgent but new palpitations, reduced exercise tolerance, or recurring chest discomfort, contact the clinician arranging the test.

Ask what the test is measuring, whether it includes stress, how to manage medicines and diabetes, what activity is allowed afterward, and when the findings will be discussed.
