What should you know about what a PET scan is for?

The test uses FDG Radiotracer or another tracer and combines functional information with CT anatomy. This can help locate active tissue, assess whether a known cancer has spread, evaluate response to treatment, or investigate a finding that remains unclear after other tests. Activity is not a diagnosis by itself: infection, inflammation, healing, and some normal organs can also take up tracer. The report is read with your history, examination, laboratory results, and previous scans. It may also help investigate conditions such as Lymphoma or a Cancer of Unknown Primary when a specialist considers PET-CT appropriate.

Before the appointment, follow instructions about fasting, exercise, medicines, and blood sugar. Tell the imaging team about diabetes, pregnancy or breastfeeding, recent surgery, infection, or difficulty staying still. After tracer injection, you rest quietly before the scan. A PET scan is usually arranged as a planned investigation, not an emergency response. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, sudden weakness, confusion, fainting, or severe chest pain. Contact your clinician promptly if a new lump, persistent unexplained fever, worsening pain, or rapid functional change is present while you await assessment.
