PET scan for the pancreas: what to know

PET uses an injected FDG radiotracer to show how actively tissues use glucose, while CT shows the pancreas and surrounding anatomy. Increased activity may occur with cancer, infection or inflammation. The scan cannot identify the cause of a pancreatic finding on its own.

Your team may compare PET-CT with contrast imaging, blood tests, symptoms and examination. If a tissue diagnosis is needed, the scan can help identify a relevant area for further assessment. It may also show whether lymph nodes or other regions need attention, but the report must be interpreted as part of the whole evaluation.

Ask the imaging centre exactly when to stop eating, what you may drink and how to take regular medicines. Tell staff about diabetes, pregnancy, breastfeeding, kidney problems or a recent infection. Rest quietly after the injection if instructed, since muscle activity can affect the images.

Bring earlier imaging and reports. When the result is available, ask whether another scan, biopsy or specialist review is needed. If the scan is investigating a possible cancer with no clear starting site, your team may explain how the findings fit with a cancer of unknown primary or another diagnosis.

Alert staff immediately if you have facial swelling, a widespread rash, dizziness or difficulty breathing after the injection. Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, chest pain or new confusion. While waiting for results, report worsening jaundice, dark urine, fever or inability to keep fluids down to your treating team.

Ask what the PET-CT is intended to clarify, whether your preparation differs because of diabetes or other conditions, and how the pancreas and nearby organs will be assessed. Ask whether a biopsy is likely, who will explain the report, and which changes in pain, appetite, digestion or jaundice require prompt contact.
