PET scan for lung cancer diagnosis: what to know

The scan pairs CT detail with an FDG-based picture of tissue activity. It can help show whether a lung lesion and nearby lymph nodes are active, and whether other areas need assessment. Infection and inflammation may also be active, so a PET finding cannot confirm lung cancer by itself.

Diagnosis usually depends on the full evaluation, which may include chest imaging, examination and a biopsy when tissue is needed. PET-CT can help guide staging and treatment discussions, while genomic tumour profiling may provide separate information about tumour features that influence systemic treatment.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about fasting, diabetes medicines, exercise and arrival time. Tell staff about pregnancy, breastfeeding, diabetes, recent infection and any difficulty staying still. Bring earlier CT images and reports if requested, and ask how long the tracer uptake and scan appointment may take.

After the report, ask whether a biopsy is needed and which area would be sampled. Depending on the findings, the team may discuss surgery such as lung lobectomy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or another treatment. A PET-CT result is one part of that decision, not a treatment choice on its own.

Report rash, swelling, dizziness or breathing difficulty to the imaging team straight away. Seek urgent care for severe breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion or sudden weakness. During assessment, contact your clinician about worsening cough, new hoarse voice, unexplained weight loss or increasing fatigue; these symptoms can have different causes and need evaluation rather than self-diagnosis.

Ask what the scan is checking, whether it is intended for diagnosis or staging, and whether a biopsy or genomic tumour profiling is planned. Clarify which findings would change the treatment discussion, who will explain the report, and which symptoms require urgent contact while you wait.
