PET scan for bone metastases

The tracer highlights tissues using more glucose or showing active change. The CT part shows anatomy, while PET shows activity; together they help the team assess bones and other organs in one examination. Healing fractures, arthritis, infection, and treatment-related change can also look active. Some bone lesions are less visible on PET, so another scan may be more informative.

The scan may help clarify whether symptoms or an imaging finding fit bone metastases and whether disease is present in more than one region. Ask which bones were examined and whether the finding is new or changed from earlier imaging. Tell the team about recent falls, fractures, dental procedures, infections, and pain. Your clinician may combine PET-CT with MRI, CT, bone-focused imaging, blood tests, or biopsy. If bone involvement is confirmed, care may include symptom control, treatment directed at the cancer, and measures that protect bone strength.

Seek urgent medical assessment for new severe back or neck pain, leg weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or inability to bear weight. These can signal pressure on the spinal cord or a weakened bone and need prompt attention, regardless of the scan result.
