What is a PET scan?

Before the scan, a small amount of FDG Radiotracer is injected into a vein. After a waiting period, the PET camera detects where the tracer collects. Active tissues may use more glucose, but infection, inflammation, healing, and some normal organs can also appear active. CT adds detailed information about location and anatomy. A radiologist or nuclear medicine specialist reviews the combined images with your history; a coloured area or bright signal is a finding to interpret, not a diagnosis on its own. PET-CT may help with diagnosis, staging, treatment planning, or checking response.

Follow the centre's instructions about fasting, water, medicines, exercise, and glucose checks. Wear comfortable clothing and tell staff about pregnancy, breastfeeding, diabetes, allergies, and difficulty lying still. Tell staff immediately about pain, swelling, or burning at the injection site. After leaving, seek urgent help for trouble breathing, fainting, or a rapidly spreading rash. Contact your referring team when the report is available so the result can be considered with symptoms, examination, and other tests.
