What should you know about a PET scan and prostate cancer?

PET combines a selected radiotracer with CT imaging. The tracer may highlight prostate cancer cells or deposits in lymph nodes and bones, while CT shows their anatomical position. The choice of tracer depends on the clinical question, such as initial staging, suspected recurrence or selecting people for a targeted radioisotope treatment.

A PET finding is considered with prostate-specific blood tests, examination, biopsy information and previous imaging. Urinary symptoms such as difficulty passing urine can have several causes and do not by themselves establish cancer or spread.

Ask the imaging centre about food, fluids, exercise and medicine instructions. Tell staff about diabetes, kidney problems, allergies, recent infection and treatments already received. During the appointment, the tracer is administered, a waiting period follows, and then you lie still while images are taken.

Ask how the result will affect the plan. Depending on the findings, the team may discuss monitoring, surgery, radiotherapy, brachytherapy, systemic treatment, bone-strengthening therapy or targeted radioisotope therapy. These choices depend on the whole clinical picture.

Tell the scan team promptly about a rash, swelling, breathing difficulty or faintness after the tracer. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness or collapse. New inability to pass urine, severe back pain with leg weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control requires urgent assessment because these symptoms can signal a serious complication.
