What should you know about PET-CT scans and lung cancer?

The scan can show activity in a lung nodule or mass, lymph nodes in the chest and other body regions. This helps the team estimate the extent of disease and choose a biopsy target when tissue is needed. It may also identify an area that requires a different test, such as brain imaging, because PET-CT does not answer every staging question.

FDG activity is not proof of lung cancer. Infection, inflammation and treatment-related change can look active, while some tumours may show less uptake. Your report is considered with pathology, CT findings, symptoms and previous imaging. A hoarse voice, breathlessness or chest pain should be assessed as a symptom, not interpreted from a scan alone.

Ask whether the scan changes the planned biopsy, operation or other treatment. Treatment choices may include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or medicines selected after tumour testing; the PET-CT is one part of that decision. Bring the report to the appointment and ask which areas are confirmed, uncertain or recommended for follow-up.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, coughing up a large amount of blood, new confusion, fainting or sudden weakness. Contact the oncology team promptly for worsening breathlessness, chest pain, fever or a new hoarse voice. These symptoms need clinical assessment regardless of what the PET-CT shows.
