PET-CT heart scan: what the images mean

The PET component uses FDG or another selected tracer to show how tissues handle the substance. CT supplies a map of the heart, chest, and nearby structures. The combined images can help investigate inflammation, an unusual area, or a cancer-related question. Normal heart muscle activity can vary with preparation, and uptake elsewhere may reflect infection, inflammation, or normal physiology. A scan cannot identify every cause on its own; the report is matched with symptoms, blood tests, prior imaging, and sometimes tissue sampling.

Ask the imaging centre how to prepare because food, exercise, medicines, and blood glucose can affect some cardiac protocols. Tell staff about diabetes, pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, and medicines. You may receive the tracer through a vein, rest in a quiet area, and then lie still while the scanner takes images. The CT portion may involve breath-hold instructions. Follow the centre's advice about fluids and close contact after the examination.

Call emergency services for chest pressure with breathlessness, fainting, severe sweating, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. Contact the scan team promptly for increasing swelling, rash, or breathing trouble after the injection. These symptoms require assessment because urgency comes from the symptom pattern, not from assuming what the PET image means.

Ask which tracer is planned, whether the scan is evaluating the heart itself or a nearby finding, and how preparation changes the interpretation. Ask when the report will be available and whether a PET-CT scan, FDG radiotracer information, or another test will be needed to clarify the result.
