How long pertussis lasts

Whooping cough commonly moves from cold-like symptoms into repeated coughing bouts, followed by a gradual recovery phase. The airways can remain sensitive after the infection is improving, so laughter, exercise, cold air or another minor illness may trigger coughing. A lingering cough does not by itself show whether the infection is still contagious; timing, treatment and symptoms all matter. A clinician can explain the expected course for your age and health.

Take prescribed treatment as directed and ask when you can return to work, school or childcare. Rest between activities, sip fluids, avoid smoke and use a humidified environment if it feels soothing. Keep a record of coughing bouts, vomiting, fever and breathing changes. Avoid exposing babies while you are awaiting advice about infectiousness, and arrange review if the cough is not gradually easing or suddenly changes.

Get emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, fainting, confusion or chest pain. Seek urgent assessment for dehydration, repeated vomiting, a new or persistent fever, or a cough that becomes markedly worse after improvement. Infants need rapid medical attention for poor feeding, unusual sleepiness or breathing pauses.

Ask which phase your symptoms suggest, whether a test or antibiotic treatment is useful now, how to judge ongoing infectiousness, and what follow-up is needed if the cough persists. Ask for a safe plan if coughing disrupts sleep or eating.
