Pertussis diagnosis and treatment

A clinician will ask when the cough began, whether it comes in bursts, whether there has been vomiting or a whoop, and whether close contact with pertussis occurred. They may examine breathing and take a sample from the nose or throat for laboratory testing. The result and timing of the sample matter, so a negative result does not make every prolonged cough harmless. Infants, pregnant people and those with breathing conditions may need particularly careful assessment.

If pertussis is suspected or confirmed, the clinician may prescribe an antibiotic suited to the patient. It works against the bacteria and can reduce transmission, but it may not immediately stop an established cough. Take it exactly as directed and ask about side effects or interactions. Rest, fluids, clean air and smaller meals can make coughing episodes easier to manage. Household contacts may need separate advice about prevention.

Obtain emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, fainting, persistent choking or inability to stay awake. Arrange prompt review for a baby with poor feeding, a cough that is rapidly intensifying, or repeated vomiting with signs of dehydration. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, long-term lung disease and medicines already being taken.
