What should you know about a personal spirometer?

Short answer

A personal spirometer measures how much and how quickly you breathe out, helping track lung function when a clinician has shown you how to use it.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the reading means

Spirometry compares the air you can force out after a full breath with the speed of that exhalation. A personal device can help monitor change over time, but readings depend on effort, posture, technique and the instrument. A single result does not identify every lung condition. Clinicians interpret the pattern alongside symptoms, examination findings, medicines and sometimes formal spirometry using calibrated equipment.

How to use it well

Use the same device and method each time, seated or standing as instructed. Take a full breath, seal your lips around the mouthpiece and blow hard and fast until your lungs feel empty. Repeat only as directed and record the result with symptoms, time and medicine use. Clean the mouthpiece according to the manufacturer’s instructions and do not share it without appropriate cleaning. Ask a clinician to watch your technique before relying on home trends, and never alter inhalers solely because of a device reading.

When to seek care

Get emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, inability to speak in full sentences, collapse, confusion or rapidly worsening wheeze. Contact your care team promptly when readings repeatedly fall below the personal range they gave you, or when cough, wheeze or breathlessness is worsening despite your action plan. A reassuring reading should not override serious symptoms.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which readings matter for you, how often to test, what personal range and action plan to use, and how to clean the mouthpiece. Ask whether formal spirometry is needed and what symptoms should prompt urgent assessment.

Questions people ask

Can a home spirometer diagnose asthma or COPD?

It can provide useful measurements, but diagnosis requires clinical assessment and may need formal spirometry.

What if the reading is low but I feel well?

Repeat it with careful technique as instructed, record the result and follow your clinician’s action plan rather than changing treatment independently.
