What should you know about personal laser hair removal?

Short answer

Personal laser hair removal targets pigment in hair follicles, but safe results depend on the device, skin tone, hair colour, and technique.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How laser hair removal works

Laser energy is absorbed more strongly by pigment in a growing hair than by nearby skin. Heat then travels toward the follicle and can reduce future growth, but hairs grow in cycles, so repeated sessions are needed. Home devices may use lower energy than professional systems. Different systems, such as Alexandrite, diode, and Nd:YAG lasers, have different wavelengths and may suit different skin and hair combinations. Laser hair removal does not treat the cause of sudden excess hair.

Before and during use

Follow the device manual and test a small area before treating a larger site. Shave if instructed, keep the skin clean and dry, and avoid waxing or plucking when the follicle must remain available. Do not treat recently tanned, sunburned, broken, infected, or inflamed skin. Avoid tattoos and dark marks unless the device instructions specifically explain a safe method. Use eye protection when required and leave the advised gap between sessions.

When to seek medical care

Stop treatment for blistering, severe pain, crusting, spreading redness, or a persistent change in pigmentation. Seek prompt advice for eye symptoms after facial treatment. Ingrown hairs, razor bumps, or recurrent inflamed lumps may need a diagnosis rather than more flashes. A clinician can also assess whether hirsutism or another condition is contributing to unwanted hair.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which wavelength and settings suit your skin, whether a professional treatment is safer, which medicines or skin products matter, and how to manage a reaction or ingrown hairs.

Questions people ask

Why are repeated sessions needed?

Hair follicles are not all active at the same time, so one session cannot affect every hair during its growth phase.

Can laser hair removal treat unexplained new hair growth?

It can reduce visible hair, but new or unusual growth should also be assessed for hirsutism or another cause.
